US OPEN REACHES INTO THEIR POCKETS
PGA - "The LIV is ruining the game and we will never change because of their influence" (or whatever they actually said...)
USGA sets U.S. Open purse at a record high for men's majors
lol
Welp, that didn't take long. Inflation is a b*&#% alright, and kudos to the menschs over at the USGA for throwing another $5M into the pot for the poor pros to split.
I mean, think about this. The week of the damn tournament, they increased the total pot by 40%!! Meaning they had that cash just chillin' in a little side pot somewhere. A rainy day fund.
I mean, maybe these LIV jumpers were right, The Tour was sleepin' on 'em.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS...
Not sure how this phenomenon escaped me until now, but branding a cocktail for each major is, as the old Guinness commercials used to say, BRILLIANT.
Phew, now that I've confused and alienated all the Breakfast Balls fans under the age of 30...
But for real, what a fantastic play by Dewar's and it's got me noodling on some other branded cocktails that either certain tournaments should adopt... or maybe it's just a party of one at the BB Scott household... time will tell.
WM Phoenix Open - "The 16th Hole"
1 part whiskey, 1 part champagne, 1 part soda water, garnished with a THC gummy.
A full party in one glass. Plus, with champagne included, now we have limitless bottles to pop for hole in ones.
The Open - "Old Fezziwig"
Shot of rum goes into equal parts Guinness and Ginger Beer
Something with some heft to help you brave the blustery conditions but the ginger beer brings a zesty pop. Merging the old world with the new.
PGA Championship - "The Wallet Drainer"
Don Julio 1942 and a healthy pour of Fresca
In honor of the PGA's dedication to sky high prices, let's f*$& up a perfectly great and expensive tequila by dumping sugary soda into it. Jokes aside, I absolutely love Fresca. Google it.
And for those doubting my mixology talents, I also created a custom cocktail my freshman year at Syracuse called "The Alaskan Pipeline" - which included a combination of Pepsi, YooHoo, Rum and Frangelico. How'd it taste? Lucky for me, no one remembered.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
GOOD LUCK PRONOUNCING THIS ONE, OUIMET
Disclaimer: I have embarrassingly never read or seen The Greatest Game Ever Played... but it's on my list. For whatever that's worth.
Really cool human interest story from The US Open this week featured the childhood home of 1913 US Open champ, Francis Ouimet.
Apparently, the self-taught caddie lived across the street from The Country Club (such a singularly bada$$ name for a course) and in 2019, the neighbor bought the home to restore it to its original glory and make it a monument to Francis' memory and golf at large.
Is it haunted?
Probably. But maybe it's a cool helpful ghost that will give you a miraculous "Rookie of the Year"-like gift to suddenly crush the ball and drain putts?
My favorite nugget from this story was when, in the course of renovation, the neighbor removed some boards from the attic to discover two of Francis' actual golf clubs tumbling down from the rafters!
Now the question becomes, do you try to hit a ball with one? I mean, there are two clubs... when the first one inevitably disintegrates in your hands... right?
In a post-Wie world, who's a guy to root for?
MEET LINN GRANT
True history was made last week, and for once, we ain't talkin' Saudis. In fact, it happened in perhaps the geographic opposite of Saudi Arabia... Sweden.
Linn Grant, a Swedish standout star from ASU who is in her first year on the LPGA tour, WON the Volvo Scandinavian Mixed Event. This makes her the first woman to ever win an event on the DP World Tour (fka The European PGA Tour).
The tournament, hosted by Annika Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson is a true mixed tournament of men and women, competing for the same prizes and the same trophy.
Linn not only won the tournament, she beat Henrik Stenson by 9 strokes! For someone who just entered professional golf less than one year ago, that's a STRONG start and has me dreaming already of her accepting the baton from my OG main squeeze Michelle Wie as we move towards a time where we can watch men and women compete on larger stages.
Golf would be better for it.
Talk about transitions!
WOMEN'S POLOS ARE BACK IN STOCK!
Easily one of the topics I get emailed about the most is when are we going to get more women's polos in???
That and I get an alarming amount of complaints that my "writing style breaks all the formal rules of English." Weird flex, but... yeah, I guess that's probably right? Can you read it? Yes? Then who needs an Oxford comma anyways. English majors, citizens and scholars. That's who.
I digress.
The headline here is that you emailed me, I pulled some strings (or rather just waited for the team to re-stock) and we are officially LOADED with women's polos. So have at it, people!
