Big announcement from LIV this week is that all 2026 tournaments will be 72 holes across four days.
For those who didn't know or were confused by the headline/subject line this week. LIV was named LIV due to the roman numerals for the number 54. So one could imagine that, when created, the league was SO SURE that the 54 hole format would stick around that they decided to name the entire operation in its honor.
But alas, sport must evolve, I'm told. By new CEO Scott O'Neil specifically. So I thought it'd be fun to do a quick "translation" of his presser quotes to help decode what's really going on.
“As we enter our fourth season as a league, the move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf that strengthens our league, challenges our elite field of players, and delivers more of the world-class golf, energy, innovation and access that our global audience wants."
Translation: "54 holes was a bad choice." - read with a Ron Burgundy from Anchorman impression.
"We’re seeing upward momentum and traction from Hong Kong to Adelaide to Indianapolis, and that heightened interest opens the door to add another day of golf while benefiting our fans, players, marketing partners, and our global media partners."
Translation: "Three days in Indianapolis isn't really drawing the crowds like we hoped, so let's add another day of TV coverage to sell ads around."
"The most successful leagues around the world - IPL, EPL, NBA, MLB, NFL - continue to innovate and evolve their product, and as an emerging league, we are no different."
Translation: "By saying we're evolving and name checking successful sports leagues, it allows us to spin the fact that we are just going back to the way tournament golf's been played this entire time."
The actual underlying reason to it all is so that LIV can more easily make their case to compete for OWGR points and therefore create a more direct path for its players to compete in majors. Which, at this point, should've just been the entire press conference.
