"You don't need a button to choke, Rory." - A dagger so good, even the Euro team had to show it some love. Ryder Cup years are the best.

Juniors and Celebs

 AMERICA ALREADY WON
As the action kicks off today, America has already been stacking up the cash... errrr I mean... wins. (Sorry, bad joke. But in a world of NIL, all this paying the Ryder Cup team business is such a nothing-burger.)

Both the Junior Ryder Cup and Celebrity All-Star teams took down the honors this week.

Future stars Asterisk Talley and Miles Russell led the charge in a come from behind victory. U.S. Team Captain Suzy Whaley shared, “They saw a sea of blue on the leaderboard and knew exactly where they stood. They showed grit, perseverance and did not give up.”

The competition was played at Nassau Country Club and the win put the U.S. overall Junior Ryder Cup record to 8-4-1.
Meanwhile the celebrities were out at Bethpage earlier this week competing in their own Ryder Cup event. Congrats, I guess, to the squad. But reading through this crew... what an odd mix of celebs.

Collin Jost - Love Collin and he's the host of the live from the Ryder Cup morning show. So sure, he probably worked it into the contract.
Eli Manning and Michael Strahan - doubling down on the New York Giants? No Jets love though?
John McEnroe - A New York guy and fits the spirit of the crowd.
Kane Brown and Miranda Lambert - ya know, for "middle America".
Bobby Flay - got to cover the Food Network fans?
Noah Kahan - ummmm

Would've loved to see the list of people who missed the cut here. But especially given it's NBA off-season, no Steph or MJ feels like a miss.

Heck, bring Lebron and Bronny in there!

Tiger's Ryder woes

 A TIME BEFORE CAMERA PHONES
Before jumping into the unreal photo from above, a quick moment to acknowledge how baffling it is that Tiger struggled at the Ryder Cup. People have tried to explain it to me. I refuse to believe it.

The actual story here is a video posted by Golf Digest with the photographer of the infamous Ryder Cup photo seen above.

The photographer is named Mark Pain and he caught the shot while sitting greenside at Celtic Manor Resort in Wales for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Tiger hit his approach into the crowd nearby and as seen in the image, attempted a flop shot back onto the green. In the most un-Tiger move, he flubs it and the shot ends up hitting Mark's bag.

Watch the full clip here for the complete story but Mark basically booked it after capturing that photo; saying "I got out of there as soon as I could because him and his caddy weren't looking happy with me... it was one of those moments where he was having a bit of a bad day."

Smart move, Mark-y.

A quick Ryder-themed power ranking

MY TOP 5 RYDER CUP PRESSER QUOTES
One thing the Ryder Cup has not been short on is pressers. They've got these guys on mics basically nonstop—which for the most part leads to a lot of pleasantries and avoiding giving the other time bulletin board material.

But every once in a while, you get some gems. So here are my favorite quotes of the week:

5) Viktor Hovland on his interest in UFOs - "What's up with that? Yeah, that's the question, isn't it; what is up with that?... Yeah, just something that I've been into the last couple years... the more you go into it, you just get more questions. It's one of those things that you don't really find any more answers."

4) Keegan Bradley on whether he'll let Bryson try to drive the green on 1 - "Yes sir. Let him get up there. We want him to do what he does, and he got up there today and hammered one right in the front right of the green.”

3) Justin Thomas on the European chants - "The chants, I don't know how the Europeans do it. It's really impressive, to be honest. I don't know if there's like a group text of 10,000 people that they just come up with these things."

2) Jon Rahm on the heckling he's been getting from fans - "He either said, ‘Hey, Rahm, where is the Ozempic?” Or ‘When’s Ozempic?’ Something ‘Ozempic.’ I just don’t know what word exactly. It was funny."

1) Luke Donald on the European team's motivations - “We're fueled by something money cannot buy.”

I've got some BAD news

 SAN DIEGO—WE'VE ARRIVED
Challenging the Ryder Cup for top golf news story in San Diego this week—I am beyond thrilled to share that Bad Birdie is COMING to San Diego!

On Friday, October 3rd we officially open a retail location at Westfield UTC.

The team has been grinding to make sure that you get the warmest welcome possible and even has some exclusive to SD drops as well as in-store competitions and free customizable gifts for opening day.

One could argue that I was the inspiration for bringing BB to the area—and that "one" who's arguing is myself. I pitched the idea for an in-store bar that I could stop by like my own Cheers bar. A place where everyone can know my name. But apparently there's something called building codes and alcohol licenses so I'll just settle for annoying the team after I swing by the nearby Din Tai Fung for dumplings.

All that was a long-winded way of saying I am so excited to welcome the crew to the neighborhood and look forward to potentially running into you locals (and visitors) sometime soon.
