"I'm having a bad, bad day. It's about time that I get my way." - Pharrell in the original Despicable Me theme song that I now crank in the car with Jack when we feel especially bada$$ cruising the streets of San Diego... or every pro last week at Torrey Pines as they battled unpredictable winds, hairy rough, and a reportedly NASTY stomach bug that hit Ludvig Aberg and a sizable collection of other players.

PGA TAKING BIG SWINGS

Gamblers rejoice as the PGA announced they will pilot a series of six ESPN Bet broadcasts for PGA tournaments this season. Their first telecast... drum roll... next week's WMPO!!!

(In our humble opinion, the very best stop on the Tour—in fact, we're pulling out all the stops for you people next week. Scroll to the bottom for the full schedule—it's a BIG one this year.)

Back to the gambling, details of what the broadcast might look like have been pretty sparse with only the following quote per the PGA Tour's press release.

Throughout the coverage, host Jonathan Coachman, on-course reporter Michael Collins and analysts including Matt Every and Graham DeLaet will present content and discussion on hole-by-hole live betting and tournament markets.

If I've learned anything from LIV and TGL it's that early broadcasts will be CLUNKY—but that said, the discussion around watching golf has been entirely focused on the glacial pace of play, lack of personality, and filling dead air. Layer in some live odds and I think you start to close that gap for people.

Now, you'll really get me if they somehow create a Place Wager button on the remote to actually be able to on-screen bet on the outcomes of any given shot...

...actually maybe don't give me that power as I consider diaper budgets and San Diego home prices.

What's my number here?

SPAGHETTI. MEET WALL.

As mentioned above, the hot topic these past few weeks concerning the PGA has been the pace of play. People all over golf social saying how absurd it is that final rounds are taking 6+ hours to complete. To which I reply, yep that's about right for Torrey Pines. Also, yep, for those of us in heavy golfing markets, golf (public golf at least) is slow AF.

That said, professional golf doesn't need to be THAT slow. Especially after seeing it in use during TGL play, many have suggested a real, enforced shot clock would be the obvious choice—buuuuuuut instead the PGA has chosen rangefinders as the next best option.

Look, I'll admit, I'm not a "rangefinder" guy so perhaps the impact of this will be far greater than I am imagining. But these caddies are so well-tuned to distances and are seemingly always deep in the yardage books so it's hard for me to believe that a faster way to judge distance will solve things.

The real culprit to me is player decision making and pre-shot routines—and for good reason. Golf is a brutal mental sport. I've backed off shots because I felt a piece of hair sticking out from under my hat. I've backed off shots because a pinhead-sized beetle crawled through my peripheral vision. I've back off shots because—you get it.

I don't know how they will introduce a shot clock, but just do it already. You'll piss off like 5 stick in the muds pros and everyone else will adjust in about a day.

BRYSON'S JUST GOING FOR IT

I don't know if I can remember seeing any athlete, in any sport, have a bigger public perception turnaround than Bryson. The past year has seemingly been a nonstop flow of PR wins, positive headlines, and universal praise.

This week was no different as videos surface of Bryson playing on the international tour in India. Don't think that's a big deal? How about this stat...

No defending major champion has ever played competitively in India before.

Not one.

If he stays on his current path—I can easily imagine a world where five, ten years from now he becomes this golf generation's worldwide icon. I picture those videos of MJ or Kobe walking through malls in the Philipines swarmed by adoring fans.

Now, is Bryson MJ? Obviously not.

But the fact that he's even thinking about things like visiting India and the crowds are already responding to him has to mean something. I remember on an exchange trip I took as a kid, I visited this school in Austria to find dozens of kids all wearing Bulls gear like it was nothing. Many never even saw a Bulls game, but wanted to rep them anyways.

Could Bryson trigger a similar movement by globetrotting his way into their hearts? Yeah, honestly. He could.

Layer on top of that the news he dropped on The Joe Pomp Show and we're really getting somewhere.

Bryson revealed a "giant project" he was finally getting off the ground. The project makes full use of his enormous LIV payout and is apparently a sports-centric community near his hometown of Modesto in central California.

“It’s been in the works for a couple of years now and we’re at the place where we are getting permits to build. People know about it now. We have acquired massive amounts of land in my hometown and it’s a three-phase process to build a whole community and increase the size of where I grew up by 30%”

30%!

The dude who I used to know as the skinny guy with the kangol... is now building cities and becoming a cultural icon in India. Wild.
